Barbie Doll Designs for Mattel Toys

COLLECTOR DOLL- MIDNIGHT PRINCESS BARBIE -Original Fashion/Doll Design -Debbie Meyer Hastey
This Design was originally one of the 6 dolls that I designed as options for the Holiday 1997 doll.
It was selected to be the Midnight Princess Barbie for the Barbie Collector's Division.

FEATURE DRIVEN DOLL PRODUCTS- THESE ARE JUST SOME OF THE MANY ADVERTISED FEATURE DRIVEN - "DOLLS THAT DO SOMETHING"-  PRODUCTS THAT I DESIGNED, OR ART DIRECTED FOR MATTEL DURING MY 7 YEAR TENURE THERE AS SENIOR MANAGER OF BARBIE DOLL DESIGN.
THE JEWEL HAIR MERMAID (Below) was a Hairplay doll with the longest hair Mattel had ever produced.

The BIG WOW doll segment for Barbie is the one that has the most outstanding advertised, and usually electronic, feature of the year.  The doll is created to be the biggest Holiday selling item. The Starlight Fairy Barbie below, was designed and produced for this slot.  My original idea came about after visiting Disneyland, and seeing the hand held light chaser mechanisms which were just beginning to enter the marketplace.  I incorporated the technology into Barbie's dress, and then came up with a relevant play pattern.

Magical Mermaids Barbie and Krissy was another BIG WOW advertised Holiday doll for Mattel.  My original inspiration for this doll was to utilize an LED color changing technology that was just being shown.  It used only 3 LEDs but by timing them properly, they would randomly create a rainbow of color options.  I was fascinated by the idea of having light under water, so I decided to hide the electronics in a Mermaid's tail.  The doll went through many different options and play patterns, and eventually we added a light up shell and the baby Krissy mermaid as well.

Tie Dye Barbie was a doll that came with mini T-Shirts and Markers so that you could tie dye shirts for her.

Ocean Friends Barbie and Keiko dolls had special Colorchange ink on their legs so that you could customize their wetsuits by dipping the dolls legs in water.  They could have traditional wetsuits, short wetsuits or simply bathing style suits.  I worked with Pilot Ink in Japan to develop this feature for production.

The Swimsuit segment  was also a big seller for Barbie each year.  Although the dolls were low priced, there were a lot of characters from Barbie's world in the segment.  I designed or art directed many different theme/line concepts for this segment, including 2 that were ultimately produced by Mattel- the Sparkle Beach line, and the Splash-n-Color line featured below.

In the Cool Skating Barbie and Friends segment below, the feature mechanism came from an outside inventor.  The mechanism needed loose fitting garments that still trendy, in order to make the dolls saleable. See the Commercial below.

Flying Hero Barbie and Friends were created to capitalize on the Power Rangers popularity. Many different features were explored and the light-up belt/power pack was ultimately the version produced.  I also designed the Flying Hero Horse as well although the original concept was for Barbie to come with a really cool winged pink motorcycle!
